Nigerian forward Philip Otele has completed a loan move to Swiss club Basel having agreed a deal with Al-Wahda FC in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old will wear the number 7 shirt and will remain with Basel until the end of the season, with the club also having an option for a permanent transfer.
Philip Otele’s move to Al-Wahda in the UAE Pro League last summer didn’t yield the desired results, but his previous stint at CFR Cluj was impressive, with 18 goals and 8 assists in 45 appearances.
The Nigerian forward also showcased his scoring prowess and athletic playing style at his earlier clubs, UTA Arad in Romania and Kauno Zalgiris in Lithuania.
Following the completion of his loan move, Philip Otele expressed his excitement at joining a club with such a rich history as FC Basel: “I am delighted that I was able to sign with FC Basel today. The club is internationally known for its successes and, both in the past and today, top players who have had world-class careers have played here,” he said.
“This is a great opportunity for me personally and I am very happy that I can join this club today. With my style of play, I try to give the team an unpredictable element in attack. I am fast and versatile in attack,” Otele added.
Sporting director, Daniel Stucki also expressed his enthusiasm for securing Otele’s signature, highlighting the Nigerian’s explosive pace and valuable experience as key assets that will bolster Basel’s prospects.
“Philip Otele is a very explosive player who brings another interesting element to our offensive game with his physique. Thanks to his age, he has already gained a lot of experience and is a great alternative for us on the wing or in attack. We are very happy that this good opportunity has now presented itself and that we have been able to win him for FCB,” Stucki asserted.
Philip Otele is poised to make his Basel debut in Sunday’s league match against Lugano, as the team aims to start the second half of the season on a strong footing.
