Swiss club Basel have reached a loan agreement to bring in Nigerian winger Philip Otele from UAE’s Al Wahda.

According to transfer specialist, Fabrizio Romano, the loan deal is with an option to buy for €3m plus sell-on clause. He also revealed that Otele will have his medical on Tuesday before he will be unveiled as a new Basel player.

Before joining Al Wahda, Philip Otele enjoyed a standout season with CFR Cluj, ending the 2023-24 campaign as Liga I’s top scorer with 18 goals. His impressive form sparked interest from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, who reportedly considered a £6 million bid with a 20% sell-on clause.

However, since making the move to Al Wahda, Philip Otele has faced challenges in securing regular playing time. After starting four consecutive Pro League games, he was subsequently benched, often brought on late in matches to either see out the game or make a potential impact.

The loan move to Basel provides Philip Otele with an opportunity to revive his promising career and gain valuable experience competing in a top-tier European league.

On the other hand, Basel are looking to bounce back from a dismal campaign last season, where they finished 9th, and they will also be hoping to end their 8-year wait for the Swiss Super League title.
