Victor Osimhen’s decision to stay at Galatasaray in January has reportedly angered Napoli, despite interest from Manchester United.

The Nigerian striker had renewed his contract with Napoli in December 2023, with a €120 million release clause and an understanding that he could leave after six months. However, no club met that valuation, and even lower offers from Chelsea and Saudi Pro League teams fell through on deadline day.

In September 2024, Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan, with Napoli hoping he would regain form and attract a bid matching his revised €81 million release clause by January.

The Super Eagles striker has found his form again in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring 10 league goals already in 15 games. The 26-year-old was also adjudged by WhoScored as the highest-rated player in the league this season.

According to La Repubblica, Manchester United eventually made a move in the winter transfer window. However, Osimhen reportedly informed Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna of his desire to remain in Turkey until the season ends.

Manchester United see him as a replacement for Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee who have both struggled for form under new manager Ruben Amorim.

This decision did not sit well with Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis, who viewed it as another act of defiance from the striker. If a transfer doesn’t materialize by the season’s end, Osimhen’s release clause will drop to €75 million.
