Ikorodu City staged a thrilling fightback to claim a hard-fought 2-1 win against Kwara United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday in their matchday 23 Nigeria Premier Football League fixture.
The game was expected to be a thrilling encounter as Ikorodu City were eager to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Rangers International and avoid a second straight loss, while Kwara United sought to build on their momentum after winning El Kanemi Warriors in their last outing.
The electric home crowd, returning to the stadium after a three-game absence, were immediately silenced as Kwara United’s Junior Aimifua caught “The Oga Boys” off guard with a lightning-fast goal just seconds into the match, stunning the hosts and giving the visitors an early lead.
Refusing to let the early goal deflate them, Ikorodu City swiftly launched wave of attacks, and their persistence paid off just seven minutes later when Ajeyigbe Toheeb netted the equalizer, sending the home crowd into raptures and restoring parity to the match.
The second half resumed with unabated intensity, as both teams battled fiercely for another goal. Ultimately, it was Ikorodu City who seized the initiative in the 64th minute, when Shola Adelani expertly directed a header into the near post, handing the hosts a hard-earned and well-deserved lead.

Kwara United launched a frantic late surge, unleashing a barrage of attacks in a desperate bid to equalize before the final whistle. However, Ikorodu City’s defense held firm, displaying unwavering resilience to protect their slender lead and secure all precious three points.
The victory took Ikorodu City to seventh place in the standings with 34 points from 23 games, narrowing the gap to just two points behind fourth-placed Abia Warriors. Meanwhile, Kwara United remained in 10th position with 29 points from 22 matches.
In other NPFL fixtures on Sunday, Niger Tornadoes drew with Plateau United 1-1 while Abia Warriors trashed Sunshine Stars 3-0. Akwa United defeated Enyimba 2-1 while Enugu Rangers dropped points against Bayelsa United in a 0-0 draw.
On the other hand, Rivers United secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Lobi Stars to reduce the gap on league leaders Remo stars, who had defeated Kano Pillars 2-1 on Saturday.
