New signing, Brown Ideye was on target as Enyimba secured their first win in the CAF Confederations Cup as they strolled past Black Bulls Maputo in a 4-1 victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

“The People’s Elephants” had lost 3-0 to the Mozambican club in the corresponding fixture and they were on a 10-game winless run in all competitions.

Enyimba however made a fast start to the game as Joseph Atule broke the deadlock in the sixth minute to record the home side’s first goal in five games before Ejaita Ifoni leveled the scoreline few minutes later after a poor defensive clearance.

Enyimba restored their lead on the cusp of half-time courtesy of Ifeanyi Ihemekwele’s second goal in the tournament and this gave the home side the advantage going into the second half.

In the 67th minute of the game, Brown Ideye who had just come on, received a pass from Joseph Atule, skipped past the goalkeeper and placed the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle to extend the lead for Enyimba.

Joseph Atule then sealed the win with a right-footed shot into the center of the goal following a fast break to round off Enyimba’s biggest win in all competitions since defeating Kaduna United 3-0 almost three months ago.

The result will be extremely satisfying for Stanley Eguma who was recently appointed to replace Yemi Olanrewaju following a string of poor results in the NPFL and in the Confederations Cup.

Despite the big win, Enyimba remain bottom of Group D with four points in four matches, however, they are only one point away from Al Masry who sit second and four points behind the leaders, Zamalek SC.

Next up, Enyimba will welcome Al Masry to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday, January 12 in a tight encounter that could have major consequences on where both teams finish.
