Nigeria’s U17 Women’s team, the Flamingos, continued their World Cup Qualifier preparations with a friendly match against Beyond Limits U13 boys team on Friday, which ended in a stalemate.
The match was the Flamingos’ third friendly game since they began camping at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne-Remo earlier this month. Having convincingly beaten Nakamura FA and ANWFCC All Stars in their previous two friendlies, the Flamingos faced a tougher challenge against the Beyond Limits U13 team.
The Flamingos started the game brightly, scoring a penalty in the 3rd minute through Aishat Animashaun’s calm finish. However, Beyond Limits stepped up their game, seeking to equalize, but they squandered several scoring opportunities.
Despite Beyond Limits’ missed chances, the Flamingos failed to capitalize on their own opportunities to seal a third consecutive friendly win. The match seemed to be heading for a victory, but Beyond Limits equalized in the final minutes with a shot from outside the box that beat the Flamingos’ goalkeeper.
Although the match ended in a draw, the Flamingos will gain momentum from the result as they prepare for their crucial two-legged qualifying clash against South Africa’s U17 girls, scheduled for March 7-16.
With the crucial fixture approaching, Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere will aim to finalize the team’s preparations and ensure they are fully fit and ready to secure World Cup qualification.
