Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) powerhouse, Enyimba FC have confirmed the sack of Yemi Olanrewaju as their head coach.

The club confirmed Olanrewaju’s sack in the statement it released on Saturday after a poor run of form.

The club also announced the appointment of two-time NPFL title-winning coach, Stanley Eguma with immediate effect.

The statement announcing the sack read: “Enyimba FC can confirm that it has parted ways with head coach Yemi Olarenwaju. The club thanks Coach Olarenwaju for his services and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”

The sack comes after a poor run of form which has seen Enyimba fall to 11th in the NPFL table and fourth in their CAF Confederation Cup group, where they have only registered one point in three games, while recently losing to Black Bulls 3-0.

While their defense has been shaky, the major reason for the loss of form of the team has been their abysmal attacking performances in recent months.

The two-time CAF Champions League champions are winless in their last nine matches in all competitions, conceding nine goals during that time, while they have only scored four goals in the same amount of games.

Yemi Olarenwaju, who was appointed as Head Coach following Finidi George’s resignation, led Enyimba to eight wins in 21 NPFL games and lost four games in the same period. For context, the former head coach had a 38.1% winning ratio and a 19% losing ratio.

In stark contrast, Stanley Eguma is a legendary figure in the NPFL. The enigmatic character was head coach of Rivers United for 16 years, leading them to two NPFL titles before he was sacked after a loss to Remo Stars in a game where he was mandated to win.

With the appointment of Stanley Eguma, Enyimba will be hoping that the experienced gaffer can help to overturn their fortunes in the CAF confederations cup while guiding them to compete for the NPFL as soon as possible.
