Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare reached a milestone on Friday, scoring his 15th league goal of the season to help Genk defeat Standard Liege 2-1 at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Genk entered the match brimming with confidence, having gone five games unbeaten in all competitions. In contrast, Standard Liege were under pressure to bounce back from their 4-2 loss to Westerlo in their previous outing.

Arokodare, who was rested in Genk’s 2-1 win over Cercle Brugge, returned to the starting lineup and made an immediate impact as the away side took the lead in the 35th minute through Christopher Bonsu Baah’s goal.

As Standard Liege pushed for an equalizer, Arokodare delivered the decisive blow, scoring a header to extend Genk’s lead and crush the home side’s hopes of a comeback.

Despite the setback, Standard Liege refused to give up, and their persistence paid off when Genk goalkeeper Mike Penders committed a foul, earning a penalty and a second yellow card leading to a sending off. Dennis Eckert converted the penalty, but the goal came too late, and Genk held on for a 2-1 victory.

The win propelled Genk to 60 points in 26 matches, increasing their advantage to a nine-point lead over second-placed Club Brugge. Genk will aim to extend their unbeaten run when they face Gent in the league on Sunday.
