Nigerian football icon Ahmed Musa has announced that he has no plans to pursue a career in coaching after retiring from professional play. Instead, he intends to focus on his personal endeavors and spend more time with his family, Bold Sports reports.
Musa, a highly decorated footballer with a distinguished career spanning 16 years, has represented Nigeria at every youth level and holds the record for the most national team caps. He was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and is the country’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup.
His club career has seen him grace top-flight leagues across Europe and Asia, with stints at renowned clubs like CSKA Moscow, Leicester City, and Al Nassr. Currently, he’s back in Nigeria, playing for Kano Pillars in the domestic league.
Despite having several years of professional football left in him, Musa has unequivocally stated his disinterest in following in the footsteps of fellow legends like Michael Essien and Yaya Toure by transitioning into coaching.
“My manager at CSKA Moscow once asked me about my post-football plans, and I told him I wouldn’t be coaching,” Musa revealed in a YouTube interview with Victor Modo. “I’ve dedicated my entire life to football, sacrificing precious time with my loved ones. After retiring, I plan to return home, focus on my business ventures, and enjoy a well-deserved break from the demands of professional football.”
While many former players find success as managers, Musa seems content to explore other avenues. Known for his involvement in the oil and gas industry and his philanthropic work, he appears set to embark on a fulfilling life beyond the football pitch.
In a distinguished international career spanning 109 matches, Musa contributed significantly to Nigeria’s attack, netting 18 goals and providing 16 assists. His club career has been equally impressive, with 77 goals and 61 assists recorded in 325 appearances.
