Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi netted his first goal of the season as the away side defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 at the Molineux Stadium on Monday.
Taiwo Awoniyi was named on the bench once again as in-form striker, Chris Wood led the team’s attack. However, Nigerian counterpart, Ola Aina started the game as the right back.
Forest made a fast start to the game as Elanga fed a perfect cut-back to Morgan Gibbs White for the midfielder to score against his former side. Chris Wood continued his hot streak as he doubled the lead just before half time with a clinical finish after a bursting run by Hudson-Odoi to set up the 33-year-old striker.
Desperate to make an impact, Taiwo Awoniyi was introduced in the 88th minute to replace Chris Wood and he almost made an instant impression after Doherty failed to clear a long ball that fell to the Nigerian who failed to convert.
With victory assured and the full-time whistle almost blown, Taiwo Awoniyi gave Forest the icing on the cake after a cross-field pass from Hudson-Odoi found James Ward Prowse who unselfishly teed up Awoniyi to score his first goal of the season.
The 27-year-old was close to tears after scoring, and he was mobbed by teammates after the full time whistle, indicating the massive love and respect the squad has for him despite not starting consistently.
With the win, Forest sit third with 40 points in 20 games, only behind Arsenal on goal difference and six points behind league leaders, Liverpool. Next up, the team will face Luton in the FA Cup in a game Awoniyi is expected to start as Nuno Espirito may decide to rotate the team ahead of their Premier League fixture against Liverpool three days later.
