Players and officials of the Super Eagles have been held hostage at Al Abaq Airport in Libya, following their arrival for the return leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, scheduled for Tuesday.

The Eagles defeated Libya 1-0 in the first leg, played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had arranged for the team’s chartered flight to land in Benghazi, just a few minutes’ drive from Benina, where the match is set to be played. However, mid-flight, the plane was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abaq Airport, about an hour from their intended destination.

The team has been stranded for more than three hours at the airport. Although the NFF had made transport arrangements for their arrival in Benghazi, there were no buses available at Al Abaq, and the Libyan Football Association failed to provide transportation.

Efforts by the NFF to arrange alternative transport were met with further complications, as officials at the airport refused to open the gates, leaving the Super Eagles contingent essentially locked up at the facility.

Al Abaq Airport is nearly a three-hour drive from Benina, adding to the challenges the team faces as they prepare for the crucial match.
