Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface returned with a bang scoring in his first start since returning from injury to propel his side to a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim in a German Bundesliga encounter at the BayArena on Sunday.
Boniface fired the hosts into the lead in the 15th minute with his weaker left foot. It was his seventh league goal of the season and his first in over three months for the club. The goal is the first since finding the back of the net in Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen on October 26th.
Boniface had been out of action for several months since suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with the Super Eagles during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in November.
The Nigeria international only lasted 45 minutes on the pitch as he was taken off at half-time for in-form Czech striker Patrik Schick who also got his name on the score sheet grabbing Leverkusen’s third goal in the 51st minute to put the game beyond the visitors.

Boniface’s compatriot Gift Orban scored what proved to be a consolation goal for Hoffenheim in the 62nd minute. Their effort to get a second was well dealt with by Leverkusen’s defense.
Reacting to the win and his goal, Boniface said he is delighted to be back and help the team get the important three points as they continue their title push.
“I feel happy, I feel great. It has been a long time since I’ve been out, I think almost two months, so to be back and playing games is really good for me,” Boniface said after the game.
“It feels good to score, not just being a striker but in general as a team to score an early goal against a top team like this, it really helps build confidence and you can see that after the goal, the team gained more confidence to score more.”
