Nigeria’s journey in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup ended on Saturday night as the United States scored once in each half, eliminating the 2022 bronze medallists in the Dominican Republic.

Coach Bankole Olowookere’s plans were severely impacted by injuries to three starters within the first 45 minutes. Forward Blessing Ifitezue was the first to be replaced by Peace Effiong, followed by left back Onyedikachi Ekezie, who was substituted for Rokibat Azeez. Defender Jumai Adebayo also sustained an injury but managed to continue after a brief pause.

In the 9th minute, Harmony Chidi, Nigeria’s top scorer in the African qualifying campaign, lifted a free-kick over the bar. She misfired again in the 28th minute. However, Mary Long tested USA goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma with a solid shot in the box, which Uzoma deflected for a corner.

The USA took the lead in the 43rd minute with a penalty from Fuller after Shakirat Moshood fouled an opponent in the box. Adebayo cleared a potential second goal just before halftime, keeping the score at 1-0 as the Americans pressed for more.

In the 64th minute, Nigeria’s captain Taiwo Afolabi stole the ball from hesitant defenders but saw her shot deflected for a corner. Fuller missed a chance to extend the lead in the 71st minute, narrowly missing the target.

The USA doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Afolabi was taken down in midfield. Kim Ascanio received the through ball and slipped it through Uzoma’s legs, making it 2-0.
