Nottingham Forest’s head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a broken nose due to an aerial collision during their FA cup victory over Exeter on Tuesday.
Earlier in the game, Taiwo Awoniyi showcased his clinical finishing skills, scoring a composed goal to give Forest the lead after Ramon Sosa’s timely equalizer that effectively cancelled out Exeter’s initial early advantage.
However, Taiwo Awoniyi’s promising evening was cut short in unfortunate circumstances, as a brutal collision with the Exeter goalkeeper left him requiring extended medical attention on the field, ultimately forcing his withdrawal from the game for Chris Wood who came on as a substitute.
As confirmed on Nottingham Forest’s official social media platforms, the head coach in his post match interview revealed that the collision led to a broken nose for Taiwo Awoniyi: “Nuno has confirmed that Taiwo Awoniyi sustained a broken nose following an aerial collision in tonight’s cup tie. Wishing you a speedy recovery, T” the statement read.
”He broke his nose, he’s in a lot of pain now but he did a good job. He proved that we can count on him, we are delighted that he scored and all the other work he did was amazing,” Nuno added.
The injury sustained by Taiwo Awoniyi comes as a significant setback for Nottingham Forest, particularly given the club’s limited striking options. With Awoniyi sidelined, the team’s attacking responsibilities will largely fall on the shoulders of Chris Wood, highlighting the need for alternative solutions to bolster their forward line.
With Nottingham Forest’s European ambitions hanging in the balance, Nuno Espírito Santo may be compelled to explore unconventional attacking options, potentially deploying players in a false 9 role in case Chris Wood needs to be rested or is unavailable.
Nonetheless, having secured their spot in the fifth round, Nottingham Forest will now shift their focus to the Premier League, where they’ll take on Fulham at Craven Cottage this Saturday, February 15.
