Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Japan in their final Group C match at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking a disappointing end to their campaign.
The loss, their heaviest of the tournament, leaves the nine-time African champions without a single point and crashing out in the group stage.
Despite high expectations after narrow losses to Brazil and Spain, the Falcons were overwhelmed by the Asian champions.
Japan took a commanding 2-0 lead within 30 minutes, courtesy of goals from Mika Hamano and Mina Tanaka. Jennifer Echegini briefly ignited hope with a late first-half strike, but Hamano’s second goal just before halftime restored Japan’s two-goal cushion.
The Super Falcons could not mount a significant comeback in the second half, and their Olympic journey ended in bitter disappointment.
