Nigeria’s Super Eagles sealed their qualification for the African Nations Championship holding in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda by defeating the Black Galaxies of Ghana 3-1 in their second-leg encounter on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

The two teams had battled to a 0-0 draw at Accra sports stadium in the first leg. As such, victory for either team would guarantee qualification for next year’s tournament.

The Super Eagles B side romped to an early 3-0 lead as Sodiq Ismail put the team ahead with a well-taken strike in the 18th minute before Nduka Junior doubled the lead just three minutes later to the dismay of the away team.

Kazeem Ogunleye then extended the lead of the Super Eagles B by capitalizing on a poor error by the Black Galaxies’ defense to dribble the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net.

Despite the huge setback, Ghana came into the second half motivated to make the game a difficult one for the Super Eagles B. Their efforts were rewarded in the 73rd minute as Stephen Amankuna pulled one back to give the away side an atom of hope.

The win means the Super Eagles B side have now qualified for the African Nations Championship which will hold from February 1 – February 25, 2025, and will be the first edition to be hosted by three countries.

Nigeria vs Ghana over the years have been one of the biggest West African football fixtures.
