Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar scored his first La Liga goal for Valencia, securing a late 1-1 draw against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Saturday.

Villarreal entered the match brimming with confidence, riding a four-game unbeaten streak that propelled them to fifth in the La Liga standings. On the other hand, Valencia aimed to build on their momentum following a 2-0 victory over Leganes in their previous outing.

Buoyed by the home crowd, Villarreal made a blistering start, earning their reward in the 32nd minute when Pape Gueye scored and secured them a slender lead by halftime.

In the second half, Valencia dominated possession and crafted scoring opportunities, but struggled to convert until Sadiq Umar’s powerful 84th-minute header sent the visiting fans into raptures, securing a vital point for his team.

The draw left Villarreal fifth in La Liga with 41 points from 24 matches, while Valencia climbed out of the relegation zone to 17th with 23 points from the same number of games.

Villarreal’s next challenge is a trip to Rayo Vallecano, where they seek to return to winning ways. Meanwhile, Valencia host Atletico Madrid, aiming to pull off an upset that would significantly boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
