Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has completed a loan deal to Valencia from Real Sociedad until the end of the season.

Umar moved from Spanish second division side Almeria to Real Sociedad in September 2022. The Nigerian international scored on his debut in a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid and he played 50 competitive matches in the past 27 months for the Spanish club in the La liga, Champions League, Europa League, and Copa Del Rey.

Previously, between October 2020 and August 2022, Umar played in a total of 84 competitive matches for Almeria in the La Liga, La Liga 2 and Copa Del Rey. In these games, the 27-year-old striker scored 43 goals and recorded 13 assists.

Born in Kaduna, Umar started his football career in Nigeria before moving to Spezia following impressive performances at the Kvarnerska Rivijera youth tournament where he won the golden boot and helped his team claim the trophy.

He was later signed by Roma in 2016 and completed several loan spells to Bologna, Torino, NAC Breda, Rangers, Perugia, and Partizan where he scored his first senior hat-trick.

The loan move is viewed as an opportunity for the striker to gain consistent game time and help Valencia escape relegation.

Umar will return to Real Sociedad at the end of the season but the deal includes an option for Valencia to sign the player permanently if they are satisfied with his services.

However, this would only be possible if the club escapes relegation as they may not have the finances to recruit Umar if they go down to the second division.

It is expected that the experienced striker will play a key role in Valencia’s survival hopes, bringing his skills and goal scoring instincts to the team.
