Eric Chelle’s unveiling ceremony scheduled for Monday, January 13 as the new head coach of the Super Eagles is now uncertain due to controversy surrounding his appointment.

Chelle, a former Mali coach, was announced as the new Super Eagles coach on January 8 by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). However, Algerian club, MC Oran claimed that Chelle is still under contract with them, casting doubt on the ceremony.

According to football journalist, MikeThePundit, Chelle will now oversee MC Oran’s cup match against Setif this weekend and has postponed his trip to Abuja, initially scheduled for today.

Despite a clause in Chelle’s contract permitting him to depart for a national team role, MC Oran are demanding compensation due to the NFF’s announcement of his appointment without their prior approval.

The NFF is under pressure to resolve the Eric Chelle situation quickly, especially after the failed appointment of Bruno Labbadia in 2024. The complication has also sparked concerns among Nigerian football fans, who are already skeptical about Chelle’s credentials.

With Chelle’s first test as Super Eagles coach looming in February, when Nigeria will hope to secure victory at the African Nations Championship holding in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, time is of the essence
