Orlando Pirates have confirmed that Nigerian defender Olisa Ndah will be out of action for the remainder of 2024 after suffering a tibia fracture during a recent league match.

Ndah, who has been a key player for the Buccaneers, picked up the injury in their 3-0 win over Polokwane City on September 24, a game in which he was named Most Valuable Player for his defensive efforts.

This injury is a major setback for the 26-year-old, who had already missed the MTN 8 final after being substituted in the 84th minute against Polokwane. His absence also puts to rest his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda and Benin Republic after missing the game against Libya last week.

The Pirates’ medical team confirmed the severity of the injury, saying, “The Bucs medical department has confirmed that the 26-year-old has suffered a tibia fracture. Due to the location and nature of the injury, the decision on surgery is not straightforward, but based on this type of injury, Ndah has been ruled out for the rest of the year.”

Before the severity of the injury was confirmed, Pirates’ manager José Luis Riveiro had expressed uncertainty about Ndah’s availability for the MTN 8 final. “In our last game against Polokwane City both Olisa Ndah and Monnapule Saleng were subbed because of different injuries, that’s the reason they were not playing (against Richards Bay),” Riveiro said.
