Onyinyechi Mark achieved a historic feat, breaking the world record twice and securing Nigeria’s first gold medal in the women’s up to 61kg para powerlifting event at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris.

The 23-year-old left no room for doubt, starting strong with a 140kg lift on her first attempt. Her gold medal was secured with a second lift of 145kg. On her third attempt, she shattered the world record with a 147kg lift, and she outdid herself once again, setting a new record with a final lift of 150kg.

Onyinyechi Mark got the better of China’s Cui Jianjin who won a silver medal with a final lift of 140kg while Mexico’s Perez Vazquez Amalia who won bronze with a final lift of 130kg.

This gold marks Nigeria’s second medal in para powerlifting, following Esther Nworgu’s silver earlier in the week. It brings Nigeria’s total medal count to three, with Mariam Bolaji also securing a silver in para powerlifting.

Onyinyechi made her debut on the international Para Powerlifting stage three years ago and has since earned World Championship silver and gold, and Paralympic gold, all while setting new world and Paralympic records.
