Head Coach Bankole Olowookere has named a 30-player squad for Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, ahead of their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying match against South Africa.
The Flamingos will begin their training camp on Sunday at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne-Remo, as they gear up for their two-legged qualifying clash against South Africa’s U-17 girls.
The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers will take place from March 7-16 as four teams from Africa will qualify for the tournament in Morocco, joining the host nation as the CAF representatives.
The Flamingos have been consistent participants in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, attending every edition except for the 2018 tournament. Prior to the 2022 edition, the team’s best finish was reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
However, the Flamingos made history in 2022 by advancing beyond the quarterfinals for the first time, defeating the USA in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw in regular time.
The Flamingos’ progress was halted in the quarterfinals of the 2024 World Cup, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the USA, who exacted revenge for their loss in the previous edition.

The Flamingos are now focused on securing a spot in the World Cup and making a deeper run in the tournament, with their sights set on claiming the ultimate prize.
