Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali scored his first goal of the season, leading English League One side Barnsley to a 2-1 away victory over Exeter City on Saturday.
Josh Megennis gave Exeter the early lead in the 13th minute, but Nwakali equalized for Barnsley in the 49th minute. Davis Keillor-Dunn then scored the winning goal in the 58th minute.
Nwakali, who started the match, not only found the net but also controlled the midfield, giving his team a significant advantage. His impressive performance earned him the Man of the Match award, winning 88.3% of the fan vote.
Expressing his excitement on social media, Nwakali tweeted, “Thanks to God, first goal, 3 points. Come on you Reds!”
Once considered one of Nigeria’s most promising talents and a potential successor to midfield legend John Mikel Obi in the Super Eagles, Nwakali has yet to fully realize his potential.
The 26-year-old is now looking to revive his career with Barnsley, having made five appearances for the club this season.
