…silver, bronze winners to go home with $3,000, $2,000
Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has announced a cash prize of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 respectively for winners of gold, silver, and bronze medals at the forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Olympics will hold on Paris from July 26 to August 11 with Nigeria sending 88 athletes.
This prize money was announced by the sports minister at the House of Representatives on Thursday as they hope to charge athletes to podium finishes at the games.
The prize money is the same as was promised to medal winners at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Then Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, however increased it to $15,000, $10,000 and $7,500 respectively for gold, silver and bronze medal winners after Blessing Oborodudu won silver medal in the wrestling event and Ese Brume won bronze medal in the long jump event.
Nigeria will participate in a total of 12 sports – athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, football, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling at the games.
Athletics (track and field) has the highest number of athletes with a total of 36 (18 men and 18 women) followed by football (18) and basketball (12).
