Nathan Tella was over the moon after scoring his first-ever Champions League goal, a feat that helped Bayer Leverkusen secure a coveted spot in the tournament’s round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Sparta Prague.
The team’s objective was clear as they needed a win to advance automatically to the next stage, and they achieved just that with a convincing performance.
Bayer Leverkusen got off to a flying start with Florian Wirtz scoring early, setting the tone for a dominant display. Nathan Tella’s decisive goal in the second half sealed the win, sending the team’s fans into raptures.

The hard-fought victory propelled Bayer Leverkusen to sixth place in the Champions League standings with 16 points from eight matches, narrowly edging out Atalanta, who finished just outside the automatic qualification spot.
Speaking after the match, Nathan Tella shared his excitement and relief about qualifying for the round of 16: “We had to try a lot. We knew that it was in our hands, if we won, we will be in the top eight. I felt that we played good and created a lot of chances.”
Tella also acknowledged some frustration with missed opportunities, stressing that he could have scored more goals: “It’s frustrating that I missed more than I probably should have but I scored and we won and we’ve qualified, that’s the main thing.”
“It’s always nice to win, especially in big games. Tonight was another big game where we had to get a good win in front of our fans and progress into the next round,” Tella added.
With qualification secured, Bayer Leverkusen will now await their possible opponents in the round of 16 as the Champions League draw for the next round will take place on Friday.
As they look ahead to the next stage of the competition, Nathan Tella’s first Champions League goal will undoubtedly serve as a confidence booster, both for him and for the entire team.
