Moses Simon produced a moment of magic to hand Nantes a dramatic 1-0 victory over Rennes in a tense Breton derby on Sunday, lifting his side out of the relegation zone.

The derby, always a fiery affair, saw both under-pressure teams fighting for form and pride. Rennes, boosted by a recent win over Saint-Étienne, dominated much of the match despite being reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Mikhail Faye was sent off.

Nantes, struggling under Antoine Kombouaré this season, held firm thanks to several key saves from Swedish goalkeeper Patrik Carlgren.

Rennes continued to press for a goal after the red card, with Amine Gouiri and Ludovic Blas testing Carlgren, but the Nantes goalkeeper stood strong to keep his side level.

With just three minutes remaining, Simon delivered the decisive moment. The Nigerian winger showed incredible composure and strength to hold off three defenders before unleashing a stunning strike into the top corner, sending the Nantes fans into celebration.

Rennes thought they had salvaged a point when Christopher Wooh headed home from a corner in stoppage time, but VAR ruled the goal out for an infringement. The decision sparked fury from Rennes coach Jorge Sampaoli, who joined Faye in receiving a red card.

The result sees Nantes climb out of the bottom three, drawing level with Rennes on 14 points, as Simon’s brilliance proved the difference in an intense derby showdown.
