Manchester City are considering a move for Nigeria international Ola Aina during the January transfer window as Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen his squad, Bold Sports reports.
Aina, who plays for Nottingham Forest, has been identified as a key target for the reigning Premier League champions. According to GiveMeSport sources, Guardiola and top officials at the Etihad Stadium have discussed signing the versatile defender to address their defensive needs.
City’s outgoing sporting director Txiki Begiristain is leading the recruitment drive before his departure at the end of the season. Aina is reportedly seen as a potential long-term replacement for Kyle Walker. However, Nottingham Forest are working to extend the 28-year-old’s contract, with the club keen to trigger a 12-month extension clause and offer him improved terms.
Despite Forest’s efforts, GiveMeSport reveals that Manchester City remain optimistic about convincing Aina to make the switch to the Etihad. The Nigeria international has been impressive this season, helping Forest stay within reach of the Premier League leaders.
However, Forest are reluctant to lose Aina mid-season as they push for European qualification. Guardiola’s side may face competition from Saudi Pro League clubs, who are reportedly prepared to offer Aina a more lucrative deal.
Aina, previously of Chelsea and Torino, has been described as a “fantastic” player by former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi. If Manchester City succeed in signing him, he would provide Guardiola with more options at right-back, alongside Walker and Rico Lewis.
