Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is set to make his first start for the national team in nearly 35 months and has expressed his eagerness to return as the team’s goalkeeper.
The Udinese shot-stopper last featured for the Super Eagles on January 23, 2022, during their 1-0 loss to Tunisia in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations. His error in the loss led to significant backlash from fans, forcing him to take a break from international duty.
During his absence, the Super Eagles found a new number one in Stanley Nwabali. However, Nwabali’s recent bereavement (father’s death) has opened the door for Okoye to make his first appearance since 2022.

Although the game might not be enough to see him reclaim the first-choice position, he will be hoping to put in a good show like he has done for his Italian club in recent months.
The 25-year-old who is eager to prove himself once again in a chat with journalist Victor Modo says he can’t wait to don the Super Eagles jersey and stand in between the sticks.
“This is the moment I have been waiting for. I have been attending camp for a long time now, and finally, I have the chance to play again. I’m thankful and I cannot wait to put on the jersey again and play in front of the Nigerian fans at home in Nigeria.”
Since his last appearance for Nigeria, Okoye’s career has been eventful, including a stint at Watford, where he struggled for game time, and a move to Serie A with Udinese, where he has fought to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
