The Louis Edem Foundation West African Basketball Invitational Championship got off to a thrilling start, with Nigerian champions Rivers Hoopers defeating defending champions Hoops and Read 72-54 in a highly anticipated matchup.

The game lived up to its billing, with both teams engaging in a fierce battle, but Rivers Hoopers ultimately emerged victorious, adding to their impressive collection of wins, after their dominant season during the 2024 Nigeria Premier Basketball League.

The tournament’s opening game saw Dolphins edge Royal Aces 67-60 in a nail-biting contest that went down to the wire. Subsequent matches saw Raptors Nigeria defeat Elan Coton 73-64, Aspac beat Spintex Knights 69-60, and Calabar Angels triumph over Aspac (female) 59-35.

In another high-scoring game, Police Baton suffered a narrow 82-87 loss to Energie in a match that showcased an energetic and intense brand of basketball, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.

Day two of the championship promises to be just as exciting, with Energie facing Victoria Queens in the opening game, followed by Lagos Legends against Spintex Knights, Elan Coton against Delta Queens, and Energie against Comets.

Dolphins will aim to maintain their momentum when they take on Aspac, while Hoops and Read will seek to bounce back from their opening loss against Police Baton. The day’s final matchup will see Aspac face Raptors.
