Renowned Jamaican coach Glen Mills, celebrated for mentoring sprint legends like Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, has revealed his excitement about working with Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the 100m hurdles world-record holder and 2022 world champion.

According to Jamaica-based SportsMax, Tobi Amusan has been quietly training in Jamaica under Mills’ guidance since September, marking a new chapter in her career.

Mills, widely regarded as one of the greatest sprint coaches in history, helped Bolt achieve unprecedented success, including world records in the 100m and 200m, eight Olympic gold medals, and 11 World Championship titles. He expressed admiration for Amusan’s professionalism and commitment to excellence.

“It has been a joy working with her because she is a true professional,” Mills said. “She brings a refreshing approach to her training. People think I don’t coach women, but I’ve worked with several, including Aleen Bailey, Cathy Rattray, and Kerron Stewart.”

Tobi Amusan, who broke the 100m hurdles world record with a time of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 World Championships, has impressed Mills with her work ethic. “She works very hard, she is conscientious, and I can see why she is the world record holder,” Mills added. “She’s enthusiastic about her progress, and I’ve already seen improvements in her performance.”

The Nigerian star, who was previously coached by Jamaican Olympian Lacena Golding-Clarke, sought out Mills to refine specific aspects of her technique. Mills noted that their collaboration has been productive. “There were certain things she wanted us to work on, and it’s going well,” he said.

While there are reports of Tobi Amusan splitting with Golding-Clarke and training with Mills since September, the world record holder still celebrated her long-term coach and her husband late November when she celebrated her induction into the University of Texas at El-Paso (UTEP) Hall of Fame.

With an unforgettable 2024 season, where Amusan failed to qualify for the final of women’s 100m hurdles at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 27-year-old will hope to get her career on track when the new season starts.
