In the spirit of Christmas, Super Eagles and Fulham FC midfielder, Alex Iwobi has displayed his generosity by opening up his own temporary shop in Canning town (East London) to provide free food to those in need this Christmas.

The shop, aptly named Alexpress offers a wide range of festive treats and essentials, all completely free of charge for individuals and their families. After shopping, they also a get free turkey to celebrate the season.

The selfless act of Iwobi, who has been on stellar form for Fulham this season, is a testament to his kind heart and his commitment to giving back to the community where he was raised during his primary school years.

Speaking with BBC News Africa, Iwobi revealed his zeal for giving back to the community and the people: “We like to do something every Christmas to try and give back. Here we are creating my own ‘Alexpress’, a little minimart to try and give out food to families that are not able to go and get food for their families for Christmas,” he said. “If I can help them celebrate a great Christmas, why not?” he added.

He also revealed his parents are his inspiration: “Just seeing how my parents are, I’ve always seen them give back. And with that as role models, it’s just made me feel like when I get in a position where I am today, or even if I was in less of a position, I would always try my best to give back and help the less fortunate or people that are not able to eat.

Asides from making others’ Christmas dreams come true, Alex Iwobi has also been making his own dreams come true as he is having arguably his best season so far since breaking out from Arsenal’s academy.

He has also been a constant presence for the Super Eagles who got to the AFCON final before losing to Ivory Coast. Iwobi maintained that it was sad not to win the AFCON but it is important to move on from the disappointment: “We wanted to win it but you can’t dwell on it, you just have to try and go again. To play in such an occasion and to be second in Africa is something we should be very proud of,” he preached.

Looking ahead, Iwobi affirms that his dream is to qualify for the World Cup: “It’s been a good 2024, we’ve qualified for the next AFCON, and hopefully next is World Cup, that is the big dream for everyone,” the Super Eagles midfielder revealed.
