Super Eagles duo Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey couldn’t prevent Fulham from suffering a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in their Premier League opener on Friday.
Joshua Zirkee’s 87th-minute strike, set up by Alejandro Garnacho, sealed the win for the Red Devils. His goal was scored with his first attempt on goal in the game.
The Nigeria internationals played key roles for the Cottagers against the more fancied Red Devils. Bassey was in the heart of Fulham’s defense alongside Issa Diop and after some early game jitters steadied the ship.
He however almost gave United their second goal of the game when he miscued a clearance but Marcus Rashford and Gernacho fluffed their lines in front of goal.
The former Ajax and Glasgow Rangers defender was shown a yellow card in the 25th minute after a heavy challenge on United’s midfielder Mason Mount. The big defender was in action for the entire duration of the game.
Iwobi, unable to replicate his goal-scoring heroics from the previous season’s encounter, was influential but couldn’t inspire Fulham to victory.
