One-cap Super Eagles forward Anthony Nwakaeme expressed regret over his departure from Trabzonspor, stating he wished he had never left the Turkish club.
Nwakaeme is a hero in Trabzon after leading the team to their first domestic league title in 38 years during the 2021/22 season. His 13 goals and 10 assists that season were instrumental in securing the Turkish Super Lig championship.
Following four successful seasons in Turkey, where he scored 47 goals in 146 games across all competitions, Nwakaeme joined Saudi Arabian side Al Feyha on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.
While he enjoyed a successful debut season with Al Feyha, scoring nine goals and providing three assists, his second season was plagued by injury and inconsistency. He managed six goals and five assists in 27 games, missing a significant portion of the season due to injury.

At the age of 35, Nwakaeme returned to Trabzonspor to mentor younger players and contribute to the team’s success. However, his return was hampered by injuries and ineligibility, limiting his initial impact.
Despite a decline in pace and athleticism due to age, Nwakaeme is gradually regaining his form. After scoring in Trabzonspor’s 3-0 victory over Alanyaspor, he expressed regret over his departure, believing he could have helped the club win another league title.
“Of course, I wish I had never left. There are some things in life that you can’t control. That’s how I left. I wish I had never left,” Nwakaeme said.
He has vowed to help the team avoid relegation, as they currently sit just three points above the drop zone. “I’m back here. I’m in my happy place. I thank our fans for their support. We are not in a good place. But we always need their support.”
