Nigerian international Gift Orban made a memorable impact as he came on to score his first goal for Hoffenheim in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Frankfurt on Sunday.
Hoffenheim were desperate for a positive result, having endured a dismal run of form that saw them secure just one victory in their previous 12 games. In contrast, Frankfurt were brimming with confidence, having won their last four matches.
Frankfurt’s in-form striker Hugo Ekitike gave his team the lead from the penalty spot after Kevin Akpoguma committed a foul. The goal seemed to energize Frankfurt, who continued to push for more goals.
However, Hoffenheim’s fortunes changed when Gift Orban was introduced into the game in the 63rd minute, replacing youngster Max Moerstedt. Just two minutes later, Orban made his mark, scoring his first goal for Hoffenheim and leveling the score line.
The joy was short-lived for Hoffenheim, as Ekitike struck again just six minutes later, restoring Frankfurt’s lead. However, Hoffenheim refused to give up, and Adam Hlozek scored a dramatic equalizer in the final minutes of the game, sending the fans into raptures.
The draw leaves Hoffenheim 15th in the table with 18 points from 19 games, four points above the relegation zone. While the result is far from ideal, Hoffenheim will take heart from their fighting spirit and the impact of Gift Orban.
Next up for Hoffenheim is a crucial test in the Europa League, where the German side must secure victory against Anderlecht to qualify for the round of 16.
