Gernot Rohr’s Benin have maintained pressure on the Super Eagles in Group D of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a commanding 3-0 victory over Rwanda at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, their designated home ground for the qualifiers.

Steve Mounie opened the scoring for the Cheetahs with an early goal in the 7th minute, followed by strikes from Cedric Hountondji and Hassane Imourane in the 67th and 70th minutes, sealing Rwanda’s fate and leaving the Amavubi with no chance of a comeback.

Benin had hoped to overtake Nigeria at the top of the group, but the Super Eagles narrowly defeated a resilient Libyan side, thanks to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 87th-minute winner, breaking Libyan hearts late in the match.

With the third round of group games concluded, Nigeria remains in first place with seven points from three matches (two wins and one draw), while Benin holds second place with six points (two wins, one loss). Rwanda and Libya are in third and fourth places, respectively.

The next round of matches, scheduled for October 15th, will see Nigeria and Benin travel to face Libya and Rwanda. Both teams will be aiming for their first away wins of the campaign, which would bring them closer to securing a spot at AFCON, set to take place in Morocco next year.
