Ex-NPFL star Abubakar Lawal dies after tragic accident

Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who played for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala on Monday, February 24, 2025.

According to Daily Post, The 29-year-old forward was reportedly on his way to a training session after dropping off a friend at Entebbe Airport when the fatal accident occurred.

Lawal had been an integral part of Vipers SC since joining the team in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali. He played a crucial role in their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title victory and had made eight league appearances this season.

Before moving to East Africa, Lawal had a notable career in the Nigerian Premier Football League, playing for clubs such as Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and Nasarawa United.

Vipers SC expressed their deep sorrow in an official statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The football community has been mourning Lawal’s loss, with fans, teammates, and fellow footballers paying tribute to his dedication and contributions to the sport.
