Enyimba United’s Confederation Cup campaign came to a disappointing end after a 3-1 loss to Zamalek SC in their final group stage match at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.

Enyimba’s chances of advancing were slim, requiring a win, but their fate was also dependent on the outcome of Al Masry’s match against Black Bulls Maputo. Meanwhile, Zamalek had already secured top spot in the group with 11 points from five matches.

Despite having already qualified, Zamalek showed no signs of complacency, taking the lead in the 29th minute through Mostafa Shalaby’s header, which dampened Enyimba’s hopes. Zamalek doubled their advantage shortly after halftime, courtesy of Seifeddine Jaziri’s goal.

Enyimba managed to reduce the deficit in the 57th minute through Ifeanyi Ihemekwele’s goal, but their push for an equalizer was thwarted when Seifeddine Jaziri scored his second goal in the 87th minute, sealing the win for Zamalek and eliminating Enyimba from the competition.

While Enyimba suffered defeat, Al Masry secured their qualification to the next round with a convincing 3-1 win over Black Bulls Maputo, thanks to Fakhreddine Ben Youssef’s hat-trick in the first half.

With their Confederation Cup campaign over, Enyimba will now focus on their NPFL campaign, which resumes on January 23 with a match against Kano Pillars, as they aim to make a late push for the title.
