Enyimba came from behind to beat rivals Rivers United and keep their title hopes alive thanks to braces from Chijioke Mbaoma and super-sub Akanni Elijah.

Rivers United went in front in the 14th minute through forward Andy Okpe. The hosts were guilty of missing goalscoring chances but that became a forgotten issue when Mbaoma grabbed the equaliser in the 38th minute.

Mbaoma scored his second of the game gaving Enyimba the lead for the first time in the 52nd minute while substitute Akanni Elijah extended Enyimba’s lead beyond a Rivers United comeback with a brace in the 66th and 76th minutes.

The result sees Enyimba move to second on the log (same points with Remo Stars), two points behind leaders Enugu Rangers who failed to get a win on their visit to Lagos against Sporting Lagos.

The win is the second for newly promoted coach Olanrewaju Yemi Daniel, who became Enyimba’s head coach after former coach Finidi George took over the Super Eagles managerial position. He earned his first win away from home against neighbours Abia Warriors last week.

The result is not a good one for Rivers United who recently fired long term manager Stanley Eguma. Traditionally one of Nigeria’s best club football team of the last decade, Rivers United are on the verge of missing out on a continental club football slot.
