Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face a stern test against Group D bottom-dwellers, Libya, on Friday in a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Despite Libya’s current position, interim coach Austin Eguavoen has emphasized the importance of taking the match seriously to avoid an upset.
Both teams are locked in a tight battle for a place in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Nigeria currently leads the group with four points, while Libya sits at the bottom with just one point. A victory for Libya in both legs could significantly boost their chances of qualifying, while a loss would severely damage their hopes.

While Nigeria are widely considered favorites, Eguavoen remains cautious. He acknowledges Libya’s preparations, including a week-long training camp and early arrival in Nigeria, which will allow them to adapt to the conditions.
“They’re down right now doesn’t mean they can’t rise because they still have a couple of games to play. They are aware of our position and they are aware of ours,” the Eagles interim coach told NFF.com.
“They will come and fight. Our main focus is on the game on Friday not the second leg. The boys are ready and we’re gonna give Libya a tough fight. We will fight for those three points because we know what it means to get the job done and over with as quickly as possible. It’s going to be tough, but I think at the end of the day, with the boys that we have and the spirit in camp, they will deliver.”
The Mediterranean Knights have faced challenges in the lead-up to the match, including injuries and the absence of key players. However, they can take solace in the fact that Nigeria will also be missing their star striker, Victor Osimhen.
As the teams prepare for the clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the stakes are high. A victory for Nigeria would solidify their position at the top of the group, while a win for Libya could reignite their qualifying hopes.
The Eagles’ other group opponents Benin and Rwanda will also face each other in a doubleheader.
