D’Tigers took a significant step toward qualifying for the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket in August, delivering a fourth-quarter masterclass to defeat Uganda 87-67 at the Grand Hall in Tripoli, Libya.

Following their hard-fought 75-70 victory over Libya in the opening game of the third qualifying window on Friday, Nigeria was able to keep their Afrobasket hopes alive. However, a win against Uganda—who had stunned Group B leaders Cape Verde 63-60 in their opener—was crucial to strengthening their position.

Uganda started the game stronger, taking a 34-28 lead at halftime (16-12 in the first quarter, 18-16 in the second). But just as they did against Libya, D’Tigers found their rhythm in the second half.

The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, ending 27-25 in favor of Nigeria. However, the fourth quarter was a complete rout. D’Tigers dominated, outscoring Uganda 32-8 to secure a commanding 20-point victory, significantly boosting their qualification prospects.

For the second consecutive game, Caleb Agada was Nigeria’s standout performer. He recorded a joint game-high 20 points, five rebounds, a joint game-high seven assists, and three steals.

Captain Ike Nwamu contributed 18 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, while Talib Zanna registered the only double-double of the game with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds (five offensive, six defensive).

On the Ugandan side, Deng John Geu matched Agada’s game-high 20 points, while Robinson Opong added 17 points. Former Phoenix Suns guard Ishmail Wainright chipped in with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and a game-high five steals.

This victory also served as revenge for Nigeria’s 72-62 loss to the Silverbacks in last year’s second qualifying window in Tunisia.

D’Tigers will now face Cape Verde tomorrow, needing a win to officially secure their Afrobasket qualification. So far, they have won two games and lost three in their five qualifying matches.
