Nigerian International Nathan Tella scored his first league goal of the season as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at the Signal Iduna Park on Friday.
The game was Tella’s fifth consecutive start across all competitions, a streak that began after his decisive goal against Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal, which sent Leverkusen to the quarterfinals.
Bayer Leverkusen, fueled by an eight-game winning streak, made a blistering start, with Nathan Tella and Patrik Schick scoring within the opening 10 minutes to establish a commanding 2-0 lead.
The thrilling start to the game persisted as Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens pulled a goal back in the 12th minute, only for Leverkusen to swiftly restore their two-goal advantage through Patrik Schick’s second strike in the 19th minute.
Nathan Tella made way for Martin Terrier in the 74th minute after sustaining a knock. Few minutes later, Dortmund reduced the deficit as Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty in the 79th minute, reigniting the home side’s hopes of a comeback.
With the win, Leverkusen remain second on the table, one point behind Bayern Munich who have a game in hand. Up next, the defending champions will face Mainz as they aim to continue their impressive winning streak.
