Rangers faced a must-win situation, needing three points to guarantee automatic qualification to the round of 16. In contrast, Union St. Gilloise found themselves in a precarious position, relying on favorable results elsewhere to secure a playoff spot.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. The match was evenly balanced, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage. However, Rangers eventually broke the deadlock in the 21st minute through Nicolas Raskin’s well-placed header from James Tavernier’s pinpoint cross.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with both teams battling for supremacy. However, Rangers’ persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Dessers embarked on an impressive run into the box from the left wing. His dazzling footwork and vision allowed him to cut the ball back precisely for Václav Cerny, who finished clinically to extend the hosts’ lead.

Union St. Gilloise refused to give up, and their efforts were rewarded in the 84th minute when Kevin Mac Allister pulled a goal back. However, Rangers’ defense held firm, and they managed to seal the win and secure automatic qualification to the round of 16.

The victory propelled Rangers into the top eight, earning them a dramatic automatic qualification with 14 points from eight matches. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for the team, and they will now look forward to the next stage of the competition with renewed confidence and optimism.
