Enyimba’s hopes of progressing from the CAF confederations cup group stage took a hit after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Masry SC at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
Enyimba went into the match requiring a victory, trailing Al Masry SC by one point in the group, with their opponents having accumulated five points from their first four games.
The match took an unfavorable turn for Enyimba when Mohamed Hashem scored in the 8th minute, giving Al Masry SC an early lead. However, Enyimba quickly regained footing in the match as Ifeanyi Ihemekwele equalized with a superb header early in the second half, leveling the score.
After Enyimba equalized, Ani Ozoemena made two brilliant stops, first saving a point-blank shot in the 50th minute, and then denying a penalty kick 18 minutes later, keeping the score tied.
With the draw, Enyimba has jumped to third place with five points from five matches, while Al Masry SC holds steady in second place with six points from the same number of games.
In the other group game, Zamalek secured a convincing 3-1 away win against Black Bulls Maputo, maintaining their unbeaten streak in the group. The victory also solidified their top position with 11 points from five matches.
To keep their qualification hopes alive, Enyimba must now win their away match against Zamalek SC and also rely on a favorable outcome when Black Bulls Maputo visit Al Masry SC.
