Nigerian sprinter Caleb Joshua made a stunning season debut in Nevada, breaking the African U-20 Record in the 60m with a time of 6.57s.
He also became the sixth fastest U-20 athlete globally and fourth fastest in NCAA D2 history.
Caleb Joshua broke the African U-20 record in the 60m, surpassing Ivory Coast’s Ibrahim Meité’s 1994 record of 6.58 seconds, a mark that had stood for nearly three decades.
He also shattered the Nigerian U-20 record of 6.66 seconds, held by Taiwo Ajibade since 2002, with his impressive time of 6.57 seconds.
This achievement improved upon Caleb’s personal best of 6.68 seconds, set earlier in the day during the preliminary rounds. He went on to win the final by a convincing margin of 0.17 seconds over Ajani Ince of the Academy of Art.
In the 2023-24 season, Caleb Joshua represented Nigeria in the 400m at the U-20 World Championships in Peru.
He also had a standout freshman year at the University of Alaska Anchorage, earning multiple honors, including: GNAC Freshman of the Year for both indoor and outdoor season, All-American honors in the 60m, 200m, and 400m events multiple school, meet, and GNAC records in the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 400m events and GNAC championships in the 100m and 200m events.
These remarkable performances has earned the youngster top rankings in several categories: No. 1 in Division II this season, tied for No. 4 performer in Division II history, tied for No. 6 performer in World U20 history, and tied for No. 12 on the Nigeria all-time performer list.
