Newly crowned champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Enugu Rangers, will begin their CAF Champions League campaign against US Zilimadjou from Comoros in the first preliminary round. Meanwhile, Remo Stars face a tougher challenge against Morocco’s ASFAR.
The draw, held at CAF headquarters in Cairo on Thursday, involved 54 clubs vying for a spot in the second preliminary round. Five teams received byes: Al Ahly, ES Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns, TP Mazembe, and Atlético Petróleos de Luanda.
Both Nigerian teams qualified by finishing top two in the NPFL. This is Remo Stars’ second consecutive Champions League appearance, while Rangers return for the first time since 2017.
The first leg of the competition is expected to take place between August 16 to 18 while the return leg will be played between August 23 t0 25.
On paper, Rangers have a favorable matchup against Zilimadjou. If they advance, they’ll face the winner in the game between Saint-Louis Suns United (Seychelles) and G.D. Sagrada Esperança (Angola) for a group stage spot.
Despite a challenging encounter with ASFAR in the 1st prelims, Remo Stars could face an even tougher opponent in the second round. The winner between Libya’s league champions and Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh awaits them if they overcome ASFAR.
