Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface will have to wait before returning to action as it was confirmed that the 24-year-old experienced what was described as a “small step back.”
The Nigerian international suffered a muscle injury in November while on international duty with the national team, but he was pictured training with his teammates shortly before Christmas, indicating his readiness to join the team on the pitch.
He was however ruled out of the last game in 2024 against Freiburg by Alonso to ensure that he regained full fitness ahead of a crucial second half of the season where Leverkusen will be aiming to seal qualification to the Champions League Round of 16 while also defending their Bundesliga title.
With eight goals and one assist in 15 games across all competitions, Boniface has been crucial for Bayer Leverkusen this season. Despite the injury setback, he is still the club’s third highest goal scorer in the league, only behind Patrik Schick (9) and Florian Wirtz (7).
The Super Eagles forward will however hope to return as soon as possible, especially with the recent signing of Argentine teenager, Alejo Sarco from Velez Sarsfield who will provide competition for the striking position.
The friendly game against Oberhausen ended 2-0 in favour of Bayer Leverkusen courtesy of goals from Patrik Schick and Florian Wirtz. The defending champions will now hope to take this form into their next game as they travel to face Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park on Friday, January 10.
