Benin Republic missed the chance to overtake Nigeria at the top of Group D in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday.
Gernot Rohr’s side, who were aiming to leapfrog the Super Eagles, came into the match buoyed by their 3-0 victory over Rwanda last week.

However, they were unable to replicate that performance, leaving them stuck in second place with six points, just one behind Nigeria, who currently lead the group with seven points.
Nigeria’s fixture against Libya, which could have impacted the standings, was postponed after the Super Eagles endured an ordeal upon their arrival in Libya. The Nigerian team was stranded at a Libyan airport for over 15 hours under challenging conditions, which led to the team boycotting the match and returning home.

CAF has since confirmed the postponement of the match, with the matter now referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for further investigation. The Super Eagles’ position at the top of the group, however, remains intact.
Rwanda’s victory boosts their chances of qualifying, bringing them to five points, while Libya lingers at the bottom of the group with just one point.
