2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season set to commence in January

The Congress of the Nigerian Women Football League has approved Wednesday, 15th January, 2025, as the kick-off date for the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season at their annual general assembly held on Tuesday, 17th December 2024 at Fabino Hotel by Toprank, Garki, FCT, Abuja.

The meeting was held to conclude the draws for the upcoming NWFL season while also charting a way forward for the women’s football rising agenda and the women’s football leagues in Nigeria.

Key stakeholders were also invited to review the successes and challenges of the 2023-24 season while discussing areas of improvement that could be carried on to ensure a better 2024-25 season.

It was revealed from the Communiqué issued at the end of the meeting that: “The league will commence on 15th January 2025 and the opening star match between defending champions Edo Queens and Abia Angels will take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on the same day.”

The communiqué also disclosed that “the promotion of Ibom Angels and Honey Badgers to the NWFL Premiership from the Championship was confirmed, while Royal Queens and Sunshine Queens were relegated to the Championship.”

The two-group league format was retained for the 2024-25 NWFL season and the teams in each group were drawn during the meeting. Group A included defending champions Edo Queens FC, alongside Abia Angels FC; Ekiti Queens FC; Heartland Queens; Confluence Queens; Remo Stars Ladies; Nasarawa Amazons; and Dannaz Ladies.

Meanwhile Group B was made up of Rivers Angels FC; Ibom Angels FC; Adamawa Queens; Naija Ratels FC; Honey Badgers FC; FC Robo Queens; Bayelsa Queens FC; and Delta Queens FC.

While there are currently 16 teams in the league, it was resolved that the number of teams will be increased to 20 ahead of the 2025-26 NWFL season.

With the draws now concluded and with the league to begin in less than a month time, NWFL clubs will have to hasten their preparations and ensure they are ready in time for the commencement of the new season. Edo Queens will be hoping to defend their title after their impressive showing in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
