Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has revealed that the harrowing ordeal faced by the national team at the hands of Libyan officials and their FA has strengthened the team’s bond.

The Nigerian team was stranded for over 20 hours at Al-Abraq International Airport after their flight to Benghazi was unexpectedly diverted. The players were left without food, proper shelter, and internet access as the airport’s Wi-Fi was shut down at the authorities’ request.

Frustrated and subjected to inhumane treatment, Troost-Ekong took to social media to express his anger and announce that the team would not be playing their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya initially scheduled for Tuesday evening. This decision was echoed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Minister of Sports, John Enoh.

Speaking upon their return to Nigeria, Ekong explained that the Libyans’ plan was to demoralize the players and gain a psychological advantage. However, their actions had the opposite effect, uniting the team even more.

“BACK HOME SAFE & SOUND,” he posted. “Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken. Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome. I’ve seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this, an experience that has brought us even closer TOGETHER.”

The Al-Kholood defender emphasized that the decision to abandon the game was a stand for human dignity and respect.

“As things escalated, this time overcoming meant taking a stand for what’s right regardless of the consequences. No team should be mistreated this way. Football is about respect, and that starts by respecting ourselves.

“My last words on this matter. I look forward to continuing our journey to the AFCON 2025 next month in November on the right way. Our goal of doing the best for Nigerian football won’t ever change.”
