Interim manager Chris Brunt and midfielder Callum Styles heaped praise on Nigerian striker Josh Maja after his impressive brace led West Brom to a 3-1 victory over Preston North End in the English Championship on New Year’s Day.

Maja ended an eight-game goal drought with two well-taken goals, helping the Baggies snap a two-game winless streak. Callum Styles added another goal, while Ryan Ledson’s 70th-minute strike proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors.

The brace brings Maja’s season tally to 12 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions. Despite his recent goal drought, Maja has been a consistent performer for West Brom, and his impactful display on Wednesday night earned him high praise from both his manager and teammate.

West Brom legend Brunt, appointed as interim manager following Carlos Corberan’s departure to Valencia, lauded Maja’s intelligence and praised the team’s strong first-half performance.

“We were excellent in the first half, and while Preston applied significant pressure in the second, it was crucial to secure the three points,” Brunt stated.

“The squad has been exceptionally well-coached over the past two years. They understand their roles and responsibilities. Josh Maja is a remarkably astute footballer, consistently finding himself in advantageous positions and finishing his chances expertly.”

Styles, who scored his first goal for the club, echoed Brunt’s sentiments, highlighting Maja’s potential for an even greater haul.

“He’s a dynamite player,” Styles declared after the match. “He could have easily scored a hat-trick today. We were firing on all cylinders in the first half. He’s a natural goalscorer, and he’s been proving it all season.”
